Following in footsteps of Kiwi NBA star By Gordon Findlater

MIDDLETON Grange’s Angus McWilliam will follow in the footsteps of Kiwi NBA star Steven Adams when he joins Texas Christian University next

year. McWilliam, 17, has committed to play at TCU under coach Jamie Dixon, who was Adams’ head coach at the University of Pittsburgh from 2012-2013. “What Steven Adams is doing

is the goal for many of us,” said McWilliam. “To know that a coach I’m going to be playing for helped him get to where he is, that’s really cool to know.” • Turn to page 4

By Charlotte Carter SPORTS CLUBS that use Denton Park have launched a campaign to try and stop the city council building a new recreational centre on site. Hornby Cricket Club president Kevin Hornbrook said he feels the sports clubs who use the park have been “left in the dark” as city council decides on a site for the new South West Leisure Kevin facility. Hornbrook They have started a “Save Denton Park” campaign on Facebook. Denton Park has been shortlisted as a site for the city council’s Hornby Library and Customer Services and South West Leisure alongside Lyle Park and Warren Park. In January, the HalswellHornby-Riccarton Community Board ran a qualitative assessment on a number of different sites in the area. Denton Park scored 80 per cent in total, making it the most viable site. Mr Hornbrook said he was frustrated with the city council’s communication about Denton Park. • Turn to page 4

Tuesday May 2 2017 FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

TENSION IS brewing over the future of Denton Park Sports clubs which use it are concerned they will not have a future on the site if the proposed Hornby Library and Customer Services and South West Leisure gets the nod to go on site. They have started a Save Denton Park campaign and it is gaining momentum. Though the facility will be fantastic to have, weighing it against the needs of the sporting codes, which may be homeless as a result, is a pretty difficult thing to do. It will be interesting to see what happens. It was a sad farewell to Harewood hockey stalwart Bill Lynn (page 3). Dubbed “Mr Nunweek”, he had a fitting farewell last Thursday. After his funeral his casket was wheeled out into the middle of the No 1 field so he could have one last visit to Nunweek Park. –Shelley Robinson

Hockey stalwart farewelled

Fashion By Bridget Rutherford IT WAS Harewood hockey stalwart Bill Lynn’s wish to visit Nunweek Park one last time – and that he did. The Harewood Hockey Club life member and patron, and Canterbury Hockey life member died on April 22, aged 87. After his funeral last Thursday, his casket, which was illustrated with a photo of Nunweek Park, was wheeled out into the middle of the No 1 field. He was then saluted with a round of applause from those who attended, and later, a rum. “He was a great lover of rums,” former Harewood Hockey Club president Gary Spence said. He said Mr Lynn was always on the sideline to chat, lend advice and cheer on the players. “We call him a club icon and a bit of a treasure.” More than 500 people gathered to farewell the man known to many as ‘Mr Nunweek’ – about 20 of those were either current or past New Zealand hockey representatives. His daughter Sue Mardon said there were two sides to her father, his family side, and his

In Brief DIESEL FIRE IN WIGRAM Firefighters were called to a 200l tank of diesel on fire in the middle of Vickerys Rd in the early hours of Sunday morning. A Sockburn crew quickly extinguished the flames, and notified the city council about the spill, which covered about 300m of road in Wigram. “It has been treated as suspicious and police attended with the fire crew,” a fire communication spokesman said. and Harewood Hockey. He really stepped up to his role as patron of Harewood.” During his 70 years at the club, Mr Lynn was involved with the construction of the original clubrooms, fundraised for the first turf to be laid in 1989, the construction of the changing rooms and the relocation of the clubrooms. He was also the clubroom bar manager for 10 years among other things. In 1996 he was named Canterbury Hockey Association Volunteer of the Year, and in 2015, he got a Lifetime Achievement at the Marriotts Hadlee Sports Awards, which was particularly special to Mr Lynn and his family. Following the February 2011 earthquake, Mr Lynn began making scrapbooks with photos and newspaper clippings about the hockey facilities and people affected. “It’s just something to keep me out of mischief,” he said at the time. A tribute from Canterbury Hockey said Mr Lynn was a fixture around the city’s hockey pitches, and his “smile and good nature were constants”.

COMBINED EFFORT: Sports clubs using Denton Park and its rooms have started a Facebook campaign to save the park. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER

Gardening • From page 1 The 2.10m power forward came to TCU’s attention during a trip with the Mainland Eagles to Las Vegas in December. TCU assistant head coach David Patrick was impressed with McWilliam and invited him for an official visit to the university in January, where he met Dixon. Dixon was in Christchurch earlier this month, where he spent time with McWilliam’s family and also held a coaching seminar at Middleton Grange. After 13 years as head coach at Pittsburgh, Dixon joined TCU last year and led them to the NIT championship, widely regarded as the second biggest prize in college basketball. der-19 basketball world cup. After the world cup, he will finish his final year at Middleton Grange, where he is deputy head boy, and hopes to play for the Canterbury Rams before making the trip to Texas.

• From page 1 “We made comments and they’ve taken no notice of our comments so far. Our club has had only two meetings with council staff about them using Denton for their facility,” Mr Hornbrook said. “We’ve also never been given the site plan which we’ve constantly asked for, there’s been no clarity from their end.” But city council recreation services manager David Bailey said though no plans had been provided, likely impacts for

each site are in the consultation document on its website. Mr Bailey said that a combined facility on Denton Park would require 11 per cent of the total park area, thus wouldn’t necessarily trigger a need for clubs to relocate. But Mr Hornbrook said he believed the proposed facilities would actually take up 33 per cent of the field area, which will have a “significant and severe effect on the clubs that use the park”. City council started the com-

munity consultation process this week for the centre and the public can add submissions until June 9. City councillor Vicki Buck said they have tried to put as much information into the have your say document as possible, so there are no surprises. “It’s been a long time coming, so actually getting some really good facilities in that area is really important. We’ve budgeted for it, so the hard part is done,” Ms Buck said.

Your Local Views Riccarton House a great testament to original owner

News

Riccarton House and Bush visitor experience co-ordinator Antonia Allison writes about the heritage home’s original owner Jane Deans

Fashion AS CO-WINNER of the 2016 Canterbury Heritage Tourism Award, Riccarton House is a great tribute and testament to its original owner Jane Deans. Mrs Deans wanted a strong and imposing family home and was very involved in the three main building stages of Riccarton House. These stages ranged from the original “substantial home of 1011 rooms” (quoted by Mrs Deans in a letter to her builder James Johnston) built in 1856 to the 40-roomed architecturally designed William England home, which was completed in 1901 and stands fully earthquake restored today. Jane’s husband John Deans I and his brother William came

Gardening out to Putaringamotu (later named Riccarton Farm by the two brothers) in 1843 with their employees, the Manson and Gebbie families, and were the first Europeans to successfully farm on the Canterbury Plains. Their fascinating historical saga of triumph and tragedy is interwoven into the tour as visitors are able to explore many

of the rooms of the heritage homestead. The original fabric of the house, the wood sourced from the bush and wall insulation made on site, has been exposed to see; as are some of the original wall papers brought out by Mrs Deans from the United Kingdom. And hanging up in an upstairs bedroom wardrobe is the christening gown, which was worn by Mrs Deans’ direct descendants dating from 1880 to the last Deans member to wear it in 1984. With the backdrop of the Saturday Farmers Market, Riccarton House is open for shortened Saturday tours which run on the half hour from 10am to 12.30pm. Free for primary school children, the tour starts from the front door of Riccarton House and takes the visitor from the lowest part of the house (the cool store) to the top (the attic) and various rooms in between. One hour tours of Riccarton House run daily at 2pm from Sunday to Friday.

Fashion Readers respond to Western News’ article on pollution concerns over buses on Riccarton Rd:

Stephen Kennington – Seems the bus exchange in Riccarton Rd has been trouble since it opened, it’s too far from where the buses actually stop, a row of bus shelters out front of the Westfield car park would have been fine, and didn’t anyone from Environment Canterbury see the news report about Custom Quay in Auckland, where too many buses stopping out front of the shops downtown, are now causing really high pollution readings. Looks like Riccarton shops are having the same treatment. Could the buses not have gone around the block behind the

mall to a Northlands style bus stop and back onto Riccarton Rd. Mavis Emberson – I would like to comment as a bus user. I catch a bus at Church Corner and either alight at the Riccarton bus lounge on the north side of the road or continue into town. I notice a great deal of heavy traffic passing while I wait for the bus and mostly the fumes come from private vehicles or large trucks. The traffic is heavy there and the buses which pass are not the ones that contribute much to the overpowering smell of diesel. If the buses were to go via Blenheim Rd, many bus travellers would have to walk a long distance to get to the shops. The whole idea taking a bus

and walking to shops is to stop traffic intensifying. Without buses traffic to Westfield surrounding shops would mostly consist of cars and there would be traffic jams. The idea that only lower class people use a bus is an odd one. I’m sure the Asian passengers who make up the passengers would be puzzled by this New Zealand attitude though they may be too polite to say so. Bus travel is normal elsewhere. Through traffic of large trucks should go via Blenheim Rd, or other routes when crossing town. Foot passengers are the ones who patronise shops. A reader responds to Constable Aaron Thorn’s opinion piece on a “no loitering bylaw” at Division St: Robin Williams – I support Constable Thorn’s wish to have

a no loitering bylaw put in place on Division St, near Riccarton Rd, in particular and in the central city. Loitering generally means not enough to do, and the combination means trouble for idol minds and hands. The cause of the loitering needs to be looked at also and attended to. For an example: Lack of home supervision, truancy from school, (if so why), if out of the educational system completely, drug issues and addiction, being a start. Assistance to find appropriate employment or study would also help. A one-stop shop as in some extreme poverty areas in the United Kingdom could be helpful, where groups of appropriate staff visit has been proven to be helpful, rather than sitting in an office waiting. Possibly a “ strike” system could be established, and for an example, five strikes

then an immediate visit to the army “boot camp” at Burnham for some weeks, and repeated if necessary. While at Burnham, attention to the previously mentioned issues is required. Medical assessments and educational assessments where necessary and home issues examined. Drug addiction needs immediate attention, so the Ministry of Health needs to provide additional funding to make treatment available. Measures need to be put in place to allow the police and justice to be able to intervene effectively—“a stitch in time saves nine” or in these cases, millions of dollars a year. Many of these adolescents need assistance to change and turn their lives around before prison occurs. A reader responds to Western News’ article on the proposed funeral facility at Rochdale St, Fendalton: Zane Blazey – The proposed Bell, Lamb & Trotter funeral home on Rochdale St sounds like a brilliant idea. With a maximum 26 services a year means up to 10 mourners once a fortnight. I can’t see this causing traffic problems. I think the people opposing this may just be scared of ghosts.

We said: Fendalton residents will continue to protest against a new funeral facility on Rochdale St.

CBHS, St Thomas both win in first UC Championship round

Angela Connell – Talk about snobbery. Get a grip Fendalton, it’s not like they are going to be partying up all day everyday and chances are if you are working, you won’t even be home during one of their services. There are a lot worse things to have next door than a funeral home.

Jack Thompson – Let’s get real here. A satellite funeral office? How about someone comes and opens a brothel. A strip club. Night club. A bar . . . I’ve worked in the funeral industry and Bell Lamb & Trotter is by far the most professional and may I add that funeral homes fly under the radar and are very quiet and peaceful locations! Grow up.

Jo Garrick – I find this stupid to protest against, please, build a house right next door I will live there. Very old fashion views to not want a funeral home that will not disturb your everyday living. It’s like your fear of death is being protested.

Lorna Bray – Snobs as hell. At the end of the street where I live is a cemetery and not very far from there is a funeral home but no one bats a lid. Get a grip Fendalton people. One day you just like the rest of us will die too. And that’s the reality no one

By Andrew King THE OPENING round of the UC Championship has begun with schools looking to stamp their mark on the competition. Solid work before and after the halftime break allowed Christchurch Boys’ to grab a bonus point victory over Waimea Combined. The defending champions recorded a 52-21 victory at home on Saturday. Now CBHS look towards their upcoming match against close rivals Burnside High. Burnside lost their opening round match against St Thomas 64-5. Burnside first XV manager Matt White said while they started well they left too much

space out wide and were punished for it. Looking ahead, White said CBHS will be tough. St Thomas started their campaign with a 64-5 bonus point victory over Burnside. Attack coach Paul Burton said while the result is a good one the team is focused more on achieving performance goals set for the season. “We have scrapped that result and know we have plenty to work on,” he said. “It is a tough road in from here.” Their next game will be against Christ’s, who are coming off a first-round 15-10 loss to Lincoln, the first time in their history they have lost to them.

Tell me about the school you’re creating? The idea is that graduates will be technically literate and can engineer something feasible, but also understand how to design something beautiful for the end user, and then how to take what they have created to market. It will be quite hands-on in that respect. Once you have your product and your end user in mind you can go right into prototyping, with access to all kinds of ‘maker spaces’, where you can create things and try them. So these students could go anywhere, working in the medical field or in education or creating sports equipment, anything. I remember as a student, engineering and arts students would constantly mock each other. It was like they spoke different languages. How on earth do you combine the two disciplines? We didn’t actually set out to do that. This degree started with a blank slate. We said what do we want to produce in a graduate? Many years ago, when I was working at University of Waikato, we had about 5000 management students at the time. I remember thinking they were probably going to end up just selling each other cellphones. The question is, who is

creating the product for them to manage? I could also see a whole group of talented students at high school who don’t have the depth in things like maths or chemistry that they would need to be engineers, but who have enormous creativity. Creativity seems to be something that is encouraged in pre-school, but seems to be lost or trained out of us as we get older. This is helping to create a pathway for people with that creativity. And the other side of it is the entrepreneurs who have created successful products and businesses, but have had to do it by the seat of their pants. Can you tell me about your own background? I was born and raised in Christchurch. The fork in the road for my career was when I was a student trying to decide whether I wanted to become a musician or an engineer. I chose engineering, because it seemed a more secure career path. I did my training in chemical engineering and followed the academic path to become Dean of Engineering, but I moulded it to my interests a lot. So did you keep playing music? Not as much as I’d have liked to.

much higher-value product. If you had done this course yourself, do you think those inventions would have turned out differently? Yes, I do think so. Designing a protein extract machine with the end user, the farmer, in mind, you would approach it differently. Nespresso is a good example. The idea was to make baristaquality coffee, but make it easily accessible to people at home. As a functional product it worked well, but it took about 30-odd years before it took off. It didn’t become popular until they incorporated the different designs and styles, and the right marketing. And George Clooney, too, but we don’t offer him as part of this course, unfortunately. If this kind of course works so well, why hasn’t it been done before? I think things have come together now for the first time. If a student can conceive an idea they now have all the digital tools on their tablet to create a 3D design. Then they can 3D print a prototype, without needing all the equipment they did in the past, or having to study for years all those industry skills you once needed to use the equipment.

I probably spent too much time practising piano when I should have been practising engineering, and too much time engineering when I should have been playing piano. Have you any inventions of

your own? I’ve got a couple of patents, but they have never made a cent. Most are quite technical. One was a protein extraction robot, which could extract protein from milk right on a farm, to create a

TECH: Using technology, like virtual reality, is one of the things the School of Product Design plans to help students explore.

The world is changing. Look at China, the online connectivity there and the number of small companies that have developed because of it. You can order just about anything and have it arrive on your doorstep a couple of weeks later. The other thing is artificial intelligence, robots. Even what we consider highly-trained knowledge workers, I think will lose their jobs to artificial intelligence. Think about architecture - you can now design your own house using just a computer and some

software. So as that develops, where does that leave architects and draftsmen? But a job that won’t be lost, is human-centred product design. And personally, why have you stayed in Christchurch? It’s this. I’ve turned down approaches from other schools overseas asking me to come and do more of the same there, because I have already followed the classic academic career. But this, the idea that we can take a whole group of young people who didn’t necessarily have a pathway open for them, and create a host of graduates who will go out with these skills and with enthusiasm to create new things: This fills me with hope. There is a vibe about the city now, it is open to innovation. I think that was the silver lining that came from the earthquakes. We have built modern buildings, yes, but also the gap fillers and the murals, which were creative and edgy and outside the old social norms. They’re what has pulled people forward. People came from all over the world to help with rebuilding the city, and they’re now saying what’s next? I know that’s the question on my mind, anyway.

Denture technicians keep abreast of industry developments As registered members of the New Zealand Dental Council, Ryan Carlton and his fellow technicians at Dentures Plus in Innes Road are required to undertake verified training at various courses every year, to upskill and keep abreast of new developments in the industry. “For example, our technicians Thomas Gu and Nicole Yee will be attending a two-day course later this year on the fitting of first-time dentures,” Ryan says. In addition, Nicole has recently spent four weeks in India as part of a course she is undertaking on maxilo facial work, which deals with artificial eyes, ears and noses. “This is a service we may potentially offer in the future,” Ryan says. Ryan himself has recently returned from the International Dental Show, which was held in Cologne, Germany. “It’s the largest trade show in the world for the industry, with manufacturers and suppliers from all over the world showcasing their products. There were over 2300 stands – it was really eyeopening.” Ryan says he was particularly interested in how digital technology is being incorporated into dentistry, for example 3D printing being used at different stages of denture manufacture such as the crown and bridge.

“It’s still in the very early stages, and it needs more development, but that’s where it’s heading,” Ryan says. He believes that in the future, people that make and fit dentures will be seen as architects rather than technicians, with patients being able to download the pattern for their dentures the architect has designed on computer, and print them on a 3D machine. In the meantime, he emphasises the importance of keeping dentures clean. Dentures Plus offers a full range of products for denture cleaning including denture cleaners, brushes and denture baths for soaking the dentures. Ryan particularly recommends Caldent denture cleaner, as it is non-abrasive and effectively removes stains, calculus and plaque. “It works wonders,” he says. “Years of stains and plaque can be removed with this product.” It can be purchased through the Dentures Plus website, www. denturesplus.co.nz, for delivery anywhere in Christchurch and throughout the country. Dentures Plus, 396 Innes Road, is open Monday to Thursday 8am-5pm and Friday 8am-2pm. To make an appointment for a consultation on denture fitting or repair, phone 385 5517.

Dentures Plus also offers a full range of products for denture cleaning.

Get rid of dampness in your house

Now wITH the colder and wetter weather on its way, home owners are focusing on ways to make their homes comfortable, warm and healthy for their families throughout winter. RISING dAmp is an issue that affects many of our older properties which suffer from poor, or no, insulation. In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many people have relocated to homes that suffer from rising damp which can be associated with health problems. Independent tests have shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise from the ground and enter a house every day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation and musty smells. moulds can produce various allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and very young are especially vulnerable. Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a locally owned and operated firm. The team

understands the problems caused by rising damp and are there to help. They will come to your damp home and pump a lightweight, flowable foam concrete under your timber floored home. Specially adapted for our New Zealand conditions and applications it provides a layer of protection against rising moisture. An unexpected benefit that the team at Canterbury Foam Concrete have noticed recently, is that many owners of properties which had underfloor foam concrete installed, reported that it also provided protection against liquefaction after the earthquakes. Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd now for your free, no obligation quote and complimentary appraisal of your underfloor ventilation needs. Phone 03 376 4608 or 0508 362626 for more information.

The facts about home ventilation Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure Under the New Zealand Building Code, all buildings, including residential, need to be suitably ventilated, either with opening windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1 states: “The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from illness or loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are many benefits to forced, or mechanical, ventilation over opening windows, including warmth, security, reduction of outside noises and reduction of condensation. Traditional domestic ventilation systems are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from outside via the roof space and force the stale air out through gaps around windows and doors. The incoming air from these systems has to be heated or cooled to keep the house warm in winter or cool in summer. The Smooth-Air HEX390 is a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It extracts air from the house and at the same time brings in fresh air. These two streams of air pass through a heat exchanger, which warms incoming air in winter and cools in summer if air conditioning is being used. This means that up to 80% of the energy which would be

ced n a l a B ure Press on lati i t n e V

wasted using a traditional positive pressure system is recovered, resulting in significant energy savings and therefore lower heating or cooling costs. Until recently, balanced pressure ventilation systems have been considerably more expensive than traditional positive pressure systems. However, with Smooth-Air’s unique manufacturing capabilities, a HEX390 balanced pressure system can be installed for a similar price as a traditional positive pressure system. Herbs & natural ingredients give powerful

GO-Advanced Omega-PC Fish Oil support for your immune system!

It is well known how important omega-3 fatty acids are to good health. It is estimated most people don’t even get a third of the recommended omega-3 fatty acids on a weekly basis. Countries with a higher amounts of omega-3 in their diet are known to have lower cardiovascular disease and, in many cases, better overall health. Recent research has shown inflammation to be a big part of disease and the ageing process.

Fish oil can help reduce inflammation by providing essential fatty acids required by the body to heal itself and maintain good health. Until now most fish oil only contained omega-3 fatty acids in triglyceride form. Fish, however, naturally contain omega-3 in triglyceride and phospholipid form but until recently the phospholipid form was lost due to the manufacturing process. GO-Advanced Omega-PC sets new standards in fish oil as it contains omega-3 attached to both triglycerides and phospholipids. Studies have shown GO-Advanced Omega-PC to be far better absorbed, leading to increased levels of vital omega-3 fatty acids in the organs thru giving the potential for more health benefits. GO-Advanced Omega-PC is produced from fresh wild deep sea cold water fish using a new advanced and more natural cold extraction process that better preserves the natural nutrient profile found in fish. It is manufactured to high GMP standards and is molecularly distilled to remove any containments, toxins and heavy metals. Further info on this revolutionary new fish oil and its benefits is available from the Natural Health Advisers, Naturopath and Medical Herbalist at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy in New Brighton, phone 388 5757. Researchers have shown that certain herbs and natural ingredients can dramatically reduce your chances of succumbing to colds and flu. Formulas like Go Healthy “Go VirDefence” has been based on the latest research and has already proved itself too many. Due to the high potency extracts used in this formula most will find only one or two capsule daily sufficient to keep our immune system at optimum, however at the first sign of any immune attack, e.g. headaches, sore throat, aches etc the dose should be increased to one or two capsules up to three times daily. Most will then find the symptoms will disappear quickly without getting worse. Go Vir-Defence contains the following powerful ingredients: Olive Leaf Extract has become one of the most popular ingredients used in the treatment of immune attacks as it has strong anti-microbial properties that help slow the growth of bacteria and prevent the

replication of viruses. Garlic Extract is effective in combating bacteria, viruses and fungi and supporting the immune system. In general it may be used as a preventative for most infectious conditions, digestive as well as respiratory. The anti-microbial action makes it suitable for treatment of respiratory infections, influenza, recurrent colds and respiratory catarrh. Andrographis Extract has powerful immune enhancing properties and has been shown to help prevent the common cold as well as reduce the duration and severity of the symptoms of the common cold. Echinacea Extract is a natural antibiotic and infection fighter. It helps kill bacteria, viruses and fungi and provides powerful immune support. Pau D’ Arco Extract assists in enhancing the body’s immune system. Citrus Bioflavonoids work with Vitamin C and support the immune system as well as strengthening capillaries and reducing inflammation. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and helps counteract many types of bacteria and viral infections. Elderberry Extract provides nutrients for immune support. Zinc is an essential mineral for the immune system and general health. It is required by every cell in the body. It is common to have sub-optimal levels of Zinc. Zinc possesses anti-viral activity. Generally this all-natural formula is very safe and highly effective without any side effects but due to the high potency extracts used please check with us first if you are on any prescription medication. This formula is also not suitable during pregnancy or lactation. GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-PC SETS NEW STANDARDS IN FISH OIL! Omega-3 fish oil normally contains the vital Omega-3 fatty acids in a triglyceride form. Fish however naturally contain Omega-3 in a triglyceride & phospholipid form but until recently the phospholipid form was lost due to the manufacturing process. Hear the blues, feel the emotion FOLLOWING on from the success of his ‘e Story of the Blues’ Show & Supper in March, modern day Blues guitarist, Ryan Neville is set to do it all again next weekend before heading off to gigs in USA. Nashville Tennessee, Las Vegas and Austin Texas are amongst the places Ryan has performed over the years. His love of blues inspired him to assemble his current show, ‘e Story of the Blues’. A masterful and colourful stage show incorporating live musicians, video, light, and sound, ‘e Story of the Blues’ takes you on a journey from the famous Robert Johnson Crossroads to the backwaters of the Mississippi Delta. “We share the stories of the famous Chicago Blues men and woman that time will not erase!” says Ryan. Four seasoned local musicians complete Ryan’s band, e Midnight Blues Band’ Emmalene Rose Sparey (vocals); Chantelle Marie Rakich (piano, keys, vocals); Chris Farmer (drums, percussion, vocals); Steve Hill (bass guitar). “Together we weave the tapestry through the decades of the greatest musical entertainers of our time,” says Ryan. “Hear the blues, feel the
